Rules of Chess The game is played by 2 players. Each piece is either "white" or "black" determined by the color of its outline. Each player picks one of these two colors, and then the players decide which color goes first. Pieces of a player's color are called "player pieces" and pieces of the other color are called "enemy pieces". Players take turns, and on each turn a player can move one piece of their color. There are three types of movement: - Walking: pieces move one square at a time horizontally or vertically to reach the desired square, and cannot move through other pieces on the way. If you must move through another piece to reach your desired destination, you are not allowed to move to that destination. - Jumping: pieces instantly move to the desired square, ignoring any pieces in their way. - Copying: the piece stays in place, but a copy is created on the desired square. Two pieces cannot occupy the same square. If your movement would end up on the same square as an enemy piece, that enemy piece is destroyed, unless it is a Tree (a special piece that cannot be destroyed) in which case you cannot make the move. If your movement would end up on the same square as another player piece, you cannot make the move, unless you are moving the Box (a special piece that swaps positions with other player pieces). When all Girl pieces of either color are destroyed, the game ends. The player who still has at least one Girl piece is the winner. Here are the movement rules for each piece. All distances are calculated assuming only horizontal and vertical movement is allowed. Box: Walk horizontally or vertically (but not both) any number of spaces, or jump to a player piece and swap positions with it. For the walking, you can (for example) walk 7 spaces to the right, or 5 spaces downwards, but you cannot walk 3 spaces right and 6 spaces downwards in a single turn. Egg: Jump up to 2 spaces, or copy a piece next to the Egg to a space next to the Egg. "Next to" means within one square horizontally or vertically. The Snail's ability to double movement distance does not affect the definition of "next to". Flower: Create a copy on an unoccupied space exactly 3 spaces away, or jump exactly 2 spaces away. Girl: Jump anywhere not occupied by an enemy Girl. Kittey: Walk up to 3 spaces or jump next to a player Rat. Rat: Jump exactly 5 or 6 spaces. Snail: Walk up to 2 spaces or jump next to a player Flower. Player pieces which are next to the snail get double distance on their movements. This affects distances only and does not allow a piece to "move twice". For example, the Snail does not change the abilities of the Girl, the Box, or the Tree. Tree: Create a copy anywhere not occupied by a piece. This piece is special in that other pieces cannot destroy it.
